Is ADHD a Mineral Deficiency? Advice on the Chemistry behind ADHD

Is ADHD a Mineral Deficiency? Advice on the Chemistry behind ADHD

By Dr. Albert Mensah, M.D.

Did you know that 90 percent of children with ADHD are very low in zinc? In over 60% of the ADHD cases we've seen, our patients lab results showed abnormally high copper levels. It's a pity this information isn't widespread among the general population because on average,  children outgrow ADHD in only about one third of mainstream medical cases. As most parents know, the standard treatment protocol for ADHD is medication, and has been for the last 30 years.

A lot of frustrated families have opted to try a more natural approach to management of ADHD symptoms. Many alternative therapies may include dietary adjustments to help aid in a reduction of symptoms. We've seen patient families who have avoided artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives  but have still seen symptoms. Other families may avoid certain foods to improve attention and brain function.

What does this mean?

If you are unusually high in copper, as most of our patients exhibiting symptoms of ADHD, you need elevated zinc supplementation. When zinc is prescribed in the right dose based on your body chemistry, it will reduce your body's copper stores and lesson your symptoms of ADHD, without the need of a medication that includes possible side effects. Copper pushes the conversion of dopamine into norepinephrine. Children with ADHD and elevated levels of copper often exhibit more anxiety. Patients high in copper are low in dopamine, which is an essential neurotransmitter.

Many parents are aware of the commonly prescribed ADHD medication, Ritalin, which is used to increase the body's level of dopamine. But can you increase dopamine levels without Ritalin? The answer is yes, by balancing the body's copper / zinc ratios.

If you've avoided ADHD medications and tried alternative therapies with less than optimal results, then targeted zinc supplementation is probably necessary for your child with ADHD.

We are Often Asked, when Adding Zinc, What's the best Dose?

I tell all my patients not to try this at home. The target dose of zinc is determined by specific lab testing, and the age, height, and weight of your child. While avoidance of damaging food additives are healthy in general, they won't correct a nutrient imbalance with laser sharp effectiveness like a targeted nutrient therapy protocol based on lab results can. Targeted nutrient therapy can have a direct and positive impact on the functionality of your child's nervous system because it's individualized to your child's specific lab results. Zinc in isolation is not as effective as it is in a compounded nutrient blend that creates a synergistic result in the body's chemistry. Just like a cook in the kitchen, we develop a protocol with the optimal ingredients for your child's body chemistry. Rather than rely on prescription medication, at Mensah Medical we normalize the neurotransmitters by balancing your child's metals with natural substances that don't cause harmful side effects.

What are Signs of Zinc Overload?

We don't recommend families self-prescribe high doses of zinc to combat what they think is a copper overload. High doses of zinc can be damaging to the body and need to be monitored by a physician. Taking high doses of zinc can lead to changes in the way iron works in your body, can cause anemia, and can create low levels of "good" HDL cholesterol when they are done without careful monitoring and lab testing. Patients who experience nausea, vomiting, or increased urinary tract infections after beginning a high dose regiment of zinc are likely experiencing zinc toxicity.

More Evidence Ties Antibiotics to Type 2 Diabetes Risk

More Evidence Ties Antibiotics to Type 2 Diabetes Risk
http://www.medpagetoday.com/Endocrinology/Diabetes/53283

Frequent antibiotic users were about 50% more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) compared with infrequent users, according to a nationwide population-based case-control study in Denmark.

In fact, increased antibiotic use among people who would eventually be diagnosed with T2DM was noted as early as 15 years before their diagnosis, reported a team of investigators led by Kristian Mikkelsen, a PhD student at the University of Copenhagen.

The study, published online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, adds to previous evidence suggesting a link between antibiotic use and T2DM, Mikkelsen and colleagues said.

"Although we cannot infer causality from this study, the findings raise the possibility that antibiotics could raise the risk of type 2 diabetes. Another equally compelling explanation may be that people develop type 2 diabetes over the course of years and face a greater risk of infection during that time," Mikkelsen said in a press release.

The investigators combined data from three national public health registries in Denmark. "Virtually all medical care in Denmark is provided by public health authorities, whereby the Danish health registries allow true population-based studies, covering all inhabitants of Denmark," the investigators said.

The research team identified all Danish citizens diagnosed with T2DM from 2000-2012 and compared antibiotic use in this population with an age- and gender-matched control population.

Compared with individuals who filled 0-1 antibiotic prescriptions during the study period, those who filled 5 or more were 53% more likely to develop diabetes (OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.50 to 1.55), the study found.

People who filled 2-4 antibiotic prescriptions also had a significantly higher T2DM risk than the lowest antibiotic users (OR 1.21; 95% CI 1.19 to 1.23).

When T2DM risk was categorized according to antibiotic type, the differences were found to be small. The strongest association was found for narrow-spectrum antibiotics (OR 1.55; 95% CI 1.53 to 1.57) and the weakest association for broad-spectrum antibiotics (OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.29 to 1.34).

"In further analysis, we found that increased exposure to antibiotics among cases was observed for up to 15 years before the type 2 diabetes index date, with a relative exposure rate (case versus controls) that slowly but consistently increased from 1.20 15 years before the index date to 1.35 in the year prior to the index date," Mikkelsen and colleagues said.

"Because different groups of bacteria may have either a positive or negative impact on host energy homeostasis and glucose metabolism, our primary aim of this study was to test the possibility that different antibiotic groups targeting specific gut bacteria classes could induce different effects on the risk for development of type 2 diabetes," the investigators said.

"However, the uniformly increased ORs for type 2 diabetes between groups of antibiotics in our study do not support the idea of one or a few antibiotics with particularly strong metabolic side effects," they said.

The investigators concluded that "our results call for new investigations of the long-term effect of antibiotics on lipid and glucose metabolism and body weight gain. In particular, we suggest investigation of commonly used narrow-spectrum penicillins because these drugs are frequently prescribed and showed the highest OR for type 2 diabetes risk."

"What struck me about this study was there was almost no difference according to the type of antibiotic. To me that's a red flag," George Grunberger, MD, of the Grunberger Diabetes Institute in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, told MedPage Today.

"Every class of antibiotics works differently. They affect different bugs. If you tell me that there was no difference among them that tends to shoot down the theory that these antibiotics are altering gut flora -- unless every class alters it in the same way," Grunberger said.

However, "as with everything else in science, we need studies to show cause and effect," he said.

In the meantime, the apparent antibiotics-T2DM link is another reason physicians should be cautious about over-prescribing antibiotics, Grunberger said.

This research was supported by the Region of Southern Denmark.

The investigators on this study reported financial relationships with a variety of commercial entities, including Novartis, Pfizer, Genzyme, Eli Lilly, Astellas, AstraZeneca, and Boehringer Ingelheim.

George Grunberger reported no relevant financial relationships with industry.

Eight Signs You May Have a Leaky Gut

Eight Signs You May Have A Leaky Gut

Homeopathy successfully treats Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Read more here www.homeopathyforwomen.org/leaky_gut_syndrome.htm

Your intestines are the gateway to your health. If your gut is healthy, chances are your overall state of health is good. Whereas if your digestive health is poor, you probably experience several varied health problems. One of the most common is fatigue.
You may have heard of leaky gut syndrome. It is increasingly being recognized as an underlying factor in most inflammatory and immune mediated health problems.

What is a leaky gut?

Your intestine is naturally permeable to very small molecules in order to absorb vital nutrients. At the same time, it is designed in a way to prevent large or harmful molecules from gaining entry to the bloodstream. In some circumstances, the healthy intestinal barrier can become inflamed or irritated, leaving it excessively permeable to harmful substances.
In some people, gluten can cause the gut cells to release zonulin, which is a protein that can break apart tight junctions in the intestinal lining. Other factors can also break down the gut lining and make it excessively leaky; most commonly gut infections, parasites, alcohol, stress, antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
When these tight junctions get broken apart, you have a leaky gut. When your gut is leaky, harmful things like bacteria, toxins, heavy metals and undigested food particles can leak through your intestines into your bloodstream. Once they get into your bloodstream, the first place they head is your liver. This puts a great strain on your liver function and it’s not surprising that most people who have had a leaky gut for some time eventually go on to develop poor liver health. Sometimes they even develop elevated liver enzymes.

What causes leaky gut?

The number one cause of leaky gut syndrome is gluten. A large percentage of the population just cannot digest gluten properly, and it triggers inflammation in the intestinal lining. You do not need to have celiac disease in order for gluten to make you very sick. Other common culprit foods are dairy products (casein), sugar and any food you are allergic to (eg. Nuts, eggs, soy, corn). Alcohol promotes increased intestinal permeability as well as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
Gut infections promote a leaky gut. The most common infectious causes are Candida overgrowth, intestinal parasites, and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). You can develop these types of infections from consuming too much sugar, poor hygiene or food poisoning.
The most common medications to promote leaky gut are antibiotics, particularly if taken long term such as for acne or bladder infections. The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin and Advil are common culprits. Steroids and stomach acid suppressing drugs also promote leaky gut.

8 Signs You May Have a Leaky Gut

If you suffer from any of the following conditions, it’s likely that you have a leaky gut.
  1. Digestive problems like gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  2. Hay fever, allergic rhinitis or sinusitis. Seasonal allergies, or year round allergies usually indicate compromised digestive health. I’ve found that quercetin and bromelain are fantastic for providing symptom relief quickly, and they are found in Allergy Relief tablets. To reduce the risk of developing these kinds of allergies in the first place, it is vital to restore your gut health.
  3. Food allergy, intolerance or sensitivity. These are clues that indicate you are not digesting your food thoroughly, and the resulting immune reaction in your intestines is inflaming the delicate gut lining.
  4. Skin problems like itchy skin, acne vulgaris or acne rosacea, cystic acne, psoriasis, dermatitis or eczema. If the skin on the outside of your body is inflamed, you can be certain that the skin on the inside is inflamed too. The lining of your insides, from your mouth right down to your anus is really like an internal skin. Healing the skin on your inside is the key to glowing, radiant, healthy skin on the outside.
  5. Mood disorders such as anxiety or depression, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Harmful bugs in your intestines produce toxins that can travel right through your bloodstream and they can even cross through your blood brain barrier. These toxins can disrupt the production of neurotransmitters in your brain and negatively affect your mood.
  6. Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. There is a great deal of solid research to confirm the link between autoimmune disease and leaky gut syndrome. An excessively permeable gut lining is thought to be a trigger for the development of an autoimmune disease, as well as a driving force in flare ups. There are 81 recognized autoimmune diseases; the most common ones are Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
  7. Autism. Autism is a very complex disorder and there are several factors that can trigger autism in a genetically susceptible child. According to Professor Alessio Fasano, a leaky gut is necessary but not sufficient to promote the development of autism.
  8. Joint pain. This is a classic symptom of an inflamed gut. Toxins that enter the bloodstream through the gut lining typically lodge in the joints and create pain and inflammation. If this is allowed to continue for years, it can wear away the protective cartilage and create structural problems. Serrapeptase is a powerful anti-inflammatory enzyme that can reduce inflammation in the joints, helping to relieve pain.

How can you heal a leaky gut?

  • Remove all known and suspected problematic foods. Gluten, dairy products and sugar should be eliminated. Since they very commonly cause food intolerance or allergy, it may be necessary to temporarily eliminate other foods such as soy, corn, nuts and eggs. It is best to be guided by a naturopath or nutritionist in this matter.
  • Kill harmful gut microbes. Berberine is an herbal extract with the ability to kill a range of different pathogens and is strongly recommended for anyone dealing with a parasitic gut infection or SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). It has shown efficacy against various bacterial strains, including cholera, giardia, shigella, and salmonella, along with staphylococcus, streptococcus, and clostridium. Berberine also has anti-protozoal effects against Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis and Leishmania donovani. Berberine has remarkable abilities to heal a leaky gut. It helps to strengthen tight junctions between cells of the small intestine, thereby reducing intestinal permeability. Berberine also protects gut cells from the damaging effects of bacterial endotoxins (such as lipopolysaccharide), and reduces the amount of lipopolysaccharide absorbed into the bloodstream and entering the liver.
  • Heal the lining of your intestines with a glutamine supplement. Glutamine literally helps to heal and seal the gut because it provides fuel for the intestinal cells; helping to repair and regenerate them.
  • Re-inoculate your intestines with beneficial microbes. A good quality probiotic is helpful, as is including fermented foods in your diet, such as sauerkraut, kefir and kimchi.
There is more information about leaky gut syndrome in our book The Ultimate Detox.

"Hook, Line and Stinker, The Truth About Fermented Cod Liver Oil" by Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD

If you are taking FCLO (fermented cod liver oil) please review the attached long (110 page) document on its quality and efficacy, written by Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel.

See this website page for the full report: http://drkaayladaniel.com/are-you-hooked-on-fermented-cod-liver-oil/

These Are Her Conclusions, At The End Of The Document:

“Lab tests indicate the Green Pasture Fermented Cod Liver Oil is rancid; putrid; low in the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K; apparently diluted with a trans-fat containing vegetable oil — and not even from cod. We have reliable reports that the X-Factor Gold Butter Oil comes from Argentina, not the Great Plains, and it tests rancid as well. And contrary to Green Pasture’s advertising, Dr. Weston A. Price’s own words make it clear that these are not products he would ever have endorsed.

Do you feel betrayed? Let down by the very health experts you trusted? Worried that you may have harmed your loved ones? Upset that you allowed “expert” opinion to override your own good common sense? Angry that you overpaid for a

product that evidence indicates was not as labeled?

Then it’s time to take back your power.

First, talk to friends and family who are taking Green Pasture products. Send them to www.drkaayladaniel.com  to get their own free copy of this report.

Then take care not to be duped again.

Know where your food is coming from. Boat to bottle. Farm to fork.

Know how your food is grown and made. No secrets. No evasions.

Be skeptical of health claims. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. And being “all natural” doesn’t change that. Finally, if you think you have health challenges related to FCLO consumption, share your story with friends, colleagues . . . and me. If you think you’ve been harmed, I would like to offer you a FREE mini appointment by phone or face-to face on Skype. To share your story or to make your appointment, contact me at wholenutritionist@earthlink.net

Newly Found Lymphatic System Connects Brain & Immunity

Newly Found Lymphatic System Connects Brain & Immunity

http://todayspractitioner.com/alzheimers/newly-found-lymphatic-system-connects-brain-immunity/?utm_source=RESENDAug172015V2&utm_campaign=ResendAug202015&utm_medium=email

August 17, 2015

You can forget everything you learned in medical school about the lymphatic system (well, not everything). But researchers at the University of Virginia found undiscovered vessels that directly connect the brain and lymphatic system, as published in Nature. Despite decades of contrary opinions they did not exist, this changes everything we understand diseases like autism, Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis. “The first time these guys showed me the basic result, I just said one sentence: ‘They’ll have to change the textbooks,” said Kevin Lee, PhD, chairman of the UVA Department of Neuroscience, described his reaction to the discovery. “There has never been a lymphatic system for the central nervous system, and it was very clear from that first singular observation – and they’ve done many studies since then to bolster the finding – that it will fundamentally change the way people look at the central nervous system’s relationship with the immune system.”

It’s a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, said researchers at the School of Medicine. They are surprised as any that such vessels could have escaped detection when the lymphatic system has been so thoroughly mapped throughout the body is surprising on its own, but the true significance of the discovery lies in the effects it could have on the study and treatment of neurological diseases ranging from autism to Alzheimer’s disease to multiple sclerosis.”Instead of asking, ‘How do we study the immune response of the brain?’ ‘Why do multiple sclerosis patients have the immune attacks?’ now we can approach this mechanistically. Because the brain is like every other tissue connected to the peripheral immune system through meningeal lymphatic vessels,” said Jonathan Kipnis, PhD, professor in the UVA Department of Neuroscience and director of UVA’s Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG). “It changes entirely the way we perceive the neuro-immune interaction. We always perceived it before as something esoteric that can’t be studied. But now we can ask mechanistic questions.””We believe that for every neurological disease that has an immune component to it, these vessels may play a major role,” Kipnis said. “Hard to imagine that these vessels would not be involved in a [neurological] disease with an immune component.”

“Very well hidden”

Even Kipnis was skeptical initially. “I really did not believe there are structures in the body that we are not aware of. I thought the body was mapped,” he said. “I thought that these discoveries ended somewhere around the middle of the last century. But apparently they have not.”

The discovery was made possible by the work of Antoine Louveau, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Kipnis’ lab. The vessels were detected after Louveau developed a method to mount a mouse’s meninges – the membranes covering the brain – on a single slide so that they could be examined as a whole. “It was fairly easy, actually,” he said. “There was one trick: We fixed the meninges within the skullcap, so that the tissue is secured in its physiological condition, and then we dissected it. If we had done it the other way around, it wouldn’t have worked.”

After noticing vessel-like patterns in the distribution of immune cells on his slides, he tested for lymphatic vessels and there they were. The impossible existed. The soft-spoken Louveau recalled the moment: “I called Jony [Kipnis] to the microscope and I said, ‘I think we have something.'”

As to how the brain’s lymphatic vessels managed to escape notice all this time, Kipnis described them as “very well hidden” and noted that they follow a major blood vessel down into the sinuses, an area difficult to image. “It’s so close to the blood vessel, you just miss it,” he said. “If you don’t know what you’re after, you just miss it.”

“Live imaging of these vessels was crucial to demonstrate their function, and it would not be possible without collaboration with Tajie Harris,” Kipnis noted. Harris, a PhD, is an assistant professor of neuroscience and a member of the BIG center. Kipnis also saluted the “phenomenal” surgical skills of Igor Smirnov, a research associate in the Kipnis lab whose work was critical to the imaging success of the study.

Alzheimer’s, autism, MS and beyond

The unexpected presence of the lymphatic vessels raises a tremendous number of questions that now need answers, both about the workings of the brain and the diseases that plague it. For example, take Alzheimer’s disease. “In Alzheimer’s, there are accumulations of big protein chunks in the brain,” Kipnis said. “We think they may be accumulating in the brain because they’re not being efficiently removed by these vessels.” He noted that the vessels look different with age, so the role they play in aging is another avenue to explore. And there’s an enormous array of other neurological diseases, from autism to multiple sclerosis, that must be reconsidered in light of the presence of something science insisted did not exist.

Anti-viral Foods for Infections

Anti-viral Foods for Infections

https://www.liverdoctor.com/anti-viral-foods/?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Liverdoctor%20Health%20News&utm_content=LD+14.07.15

This information has been carefully researched and will be invaluable to those with chronic viral hepatitis who wish to optimize their chances of good health. Nutritional medicine can help to reduce the ability of these hepatitis viruses from damaging your liver and can reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Let us begin!

All plants contain antiviral compounds but few foods have been thoroughly tested to confirm how many of these compounds exist in each plant and which viruses they kill. At this time we do not know how the viruses get blocked or killed but in general, we have laboratory study evidence, as well as immune enhancing effects in humans. These foods are also rich in essential nutrients needed for a strong immune system and a healthy liver.

Historical usage also counts; for instance, lemon has long been a cold and flu remedy, and citrus fruits contain 15 different antiviral compounds; lemon leaf having the highest known concentration of antiviral compounds of any plant.

More than 350 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B virus, which kills more than a million people each year due to acute and chronic hepatitis, and liver cancer. The hepatitis B virus, which attacks the liver, is spread through infected blood transfusions, needle sharing by intravenous drug abusers and sexual contact. Hepatitis B is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the world.

Given the very different nature of the foods in the table this suggests that a diet rich in varied types of plant foods is basically an antiviral diet.
All these foods have been identified as containing antiviral activity and many have been shown to improve immune and liver function.

Some of my recommended foods, notably medicinal mushrooms and sea vegetables, are an acquired taste and I hope you will gradually get to enjoy them!
I am convinced that eating a wide range of plant foods and herbs, in as natural a state as possible, will help to reduce the severity of chronic infections with the hepatitis B and C viruses.
I am not recommending that eating only one antiviral food each day will help treat viral hepatitis, so don’t eat enormous quantities of any one food.

Anti-viral Foods List

Lemon

Lemon and other citrus fruits contain at least 15 different antiviral compounds and should be consumed daily by those serious about avoiding liver damage from hepatitis viruses. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is the best source of anti-viral substances and vitamin C. I drink lemon juice everyday to control sinusitis and strengthen my immune system.

Other ways of getting antiviral properties from citrus:

  • Add some grated lemon peel to salads, soups, casseroles, and to baked goods such as cakes and muffins.
  • Eat or juice four different citrus fruits (lemon, orange, lime, mandarin or grapefruit) daily as a preventive.
  • Have one glass citrus juice, three times daily if you have the flu – use a combination of oranges, limes and lemons. If you pass the fruit through a juice extracting machine you can leave a lot of the white pith attached so that this is juiced along with the flesh; this makes its healing properties stronger.
Changing your diet and lifestyle can be stressful but if at the very least you can –
  • Add in one healthy food or recipe a week
  • Make or buy a raw juice several times a week
  • Drink the juice of 2 limes or 2 lemons every day – you will not only strengthen your immune system, you will also slow down the aging process !

Selenium is the most important mineral for the immune system to function at its optimal level; indeed without adequate selenium in your body, your immune system will remain vulnerable to attack. It’s amazing to think that despite the profound importance of selenium to a strong immune system, many people remain deficient in this life enhancing mineral.

Research has proven that selenium is vital for healthy immune system function. A selenium deficiency suppresses your immune system and makes you more prone to infections, especially viral infections. Viruses replicate more easily in selenium deficient people. For this reason selenium is sometimes called the “viral birth control pill”. Selenium enhances the function of your white blood cells. Selenium is found in Brazil nuts and some seafood. If you don’t get adequate selenium in your diet, Selenomune Designer Energy capsules can help.
